Enhancing Accessibility: A Call for Inclusive Dining Experiences

‘Any dietary requirements we should know about?’ has become a standard greeting pretty much anywhere food is prepared to order but what other questions should we be asking to make hospitality more accessible for all?

Emma Hodges, Accessibility Consultant to the UK wine trade, explains why she’s making a call for a more inclusive dinning experience and talks us through the steps we can take to enhance accessibility in the on-trade.

“In recent times, I've observed a growing trend when making restaurant reservations - a thoughtful enquiry about allergies or dietary restrictions either during booking or upon arrival. This practice, aimed at ensuring a comfortable dining experience, showcases the commitment of establishments to cater to diverse customer needs. However, as we progress towards greater inclusivity, it's worth pondering whether we should extend this consideration beyond dietary concerns.

Rarely do we find information readily available about a restaurant's accessibility features - whether it's wheelchair-friendly entrances, the presence of quiet areas, or the availability of large print menus. It prompts me to contemplate the importance of asking an additional question:

"Do you have any allergies, dietary preferences, or require any extra support to fully access and enjoy your experience?"

Imagine the impact of this simple addition to the original enquiry. By explicitly asking about the need for additional support, we take a step towards creating a more inclusive environment. It opens the door for customers to express their requirements, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their unique needs, can fully participate in and enjoy the dining experience.

The quest for inclusivity goes beyond dietary considerations - it encompasses a spectrum of requirements that, when acknowledged and addressed, contribute to a truly welcoming atmosphere. As we become more mindful of diverse needs, I would like to encourage the hospitality industry to embrace a holistic approach, fostering an inclusive dining culture where every guest feels seen, heard, and accommodated.

Next time you make or take a reservation you can contribute to a more inclusive and accessible dining landscape by asking or being asked that additional question and - one that celebrates the needs of the rich diversity of all patrons.”
